Hypertension is a serious chronic disease that affects about 50 million Brazilians, but it is still underestimated by many people. This is because, without constant and proper treatment, the disease can bring serious complications in the future. Since it is very difficult for a person with high blood pressure to show symptoms, some patients abandon treatment, believing that their pressure is already stabilized. But it doesn’t work that way. Treatment is lifelong and goes far beyond the use of medication.
To keep blood pressure up to 120 over 80 (limit considered normal), a series of measures is needed and, in many cases, lifestyle changes. Regular physical activity, reduced consumption of salt and alcoholic beverages, as well as weight and stress control, are key actions for effective treatment.
But attention: don’t think that a simple reduction in the amount of salt used when preparing food is enough. It is necessary to keep an eye on the amount of sodium present in the salt shaker, that is, in added salt. According to the 2008 Household Budget Survey by IBGE (POF), salt is the main ingredient responsible for high sodium intake. That’s why you should prioritize cooking your own meals as much as possible, with varied foods and ingredients. It is worth remembering that weight gain is directly related to increased pressure, and losing just a few extra pounds can already generate results and help control the disease.
In mild cases, it is possible to regulate blood pressure only with lifestyle changes and a balanced diet. However, it is always essential to follow medical recommendations. For those undergoing treatment with medication, it is important to emphasize that medicines should not be taken only when blood pressure rises, but continuously. Never stop taking them without talking to your doctor.
