The second most consumed beverage in the world is popular in hot and iced versions, at breakfast, in the afternoon, and even before bedtime. Tea only loses to water in humanity’s preference, and there is a good reason for this: besides being delicious, it contains nutrients that are very good for the body and contribute to health.

Countries like India, Pakistan, Morocco, and the United Kingdom are champions when it comes to enjoying this beverage, and it was Confucius, a Chinese leader of the 6th century B.C., who spread the culture of drinking and appreciating it. Here in Brazil, it is also very popular.

Technically, however, not everything can be called tea. Teas are only those derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant, that is, green teas (some of them umami!), white and black. Other beverages made with different fruits and leaves (such as chamomile, lemon balm, etc.) should technically be called only “infusions.” But that doesn’t stop us from continuing to call these other beverages teas, since we have already incorporated them into our culture with that name.

Now that you know the main characteristics of this tasty beverage, how about learning a bit about how each one can benefit your body? Remember that none of these preparations replace a visit to the doctor or the use of medicine. They are only allies of your health and should be consumed in moderation. Check it out:

– Green tea: besides the fact that some are umami, green tea has a very characteristic taste, contains flavonoids, powerful antioxidants (which can help those with heart problems), and catechins (which help keep the arteries of the heart dilated and relaxed). The list of benefits is long: studies point out that it can stimulate enzymes, promoting fat breakdown, speed up metabolism, protect against cholesterol, improve mood, and aid digestion. It also contains significant amounts of manganese, potassium, folic acid, vitamin C, K, B1, and B2, all very important nutrients for the body.

– Fennel tea: this aromatic herb can greatly help when the problem is digestion, such as bloating and gas, for example. In addition, because it contains potassium, this tea can reduce blood pressure and heart rate. Studies also suggest effectiveness in treating cancer patients who need a calming effect.

– Mate tea: it tops the list of Brazilian favorites. It is one of the allies in the fight against cholesterol since it contains substances with anti-inflammatory effects. Diabetics can also count on this beverage to help lower blood glucose levels. The high amounts of vitamin B1 help the body capture energy in the cells, mainly in neurons, contributing to the proper functioning of the brain.

– Hibiscus tea: this one can make less fat accumulate in the abdominal and hip region, believe it or not. Research shows that the action of antioxidants reduces this fat deposit. It also helps lower blood pressure, controls cholesterol, and has a diuretic effect.

– White tea: the antioxidant action is the highlight of this beverage. Catechins are very present in this tea and can be allies in the fight against cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and degenerative brain diseases. In addition, it can contribute to good mood. That’s because it contains an amino acid (called L-theanine) that stimulates neurotransmitters responsible for giving a sense of well-being.

Tip: to add a little extra flavor to these teas, how about adding a bit of milk and giving your beverage an English touch? It’s delicious!
